Located in Austin County in southeastern Texas, Sealy is part of the Houston Metro area with a population of around 7000. It’s located just 49 miles west of downtown Houston. Sealy got a unique start as San Felipe a sold part of its original 22,000-acre Township to the Gulf Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad. This created Sealy in 1879. It gets its name from the business tycoon and stockholder George Sealy of Galveston. You might’ve heard this name before because in 1881, Daniel Haynes, a cotton gin builder, filed a request for cotton-filled mattress which started the Sealy mattress company. Businesses grew exponentially which led to more innovation and several other patents and inventions came out of Sealy.
Sealy has its own Sealy Independent school district and has several elementary schools, and intermediate school for grades 4 and 5, a junior high, and a high school. All of these schools are located within the city limits and blend college has a Sealy campus located along Interstate 10.

It’s conveniently located at the intersections of Interstate 10, US Highway 90, the Texas Highway 36 and the mainlines for the BNSF railroad as well as the Union Pacific Railroad. This is the economic hub of the county and the largest city in Austin County.
